Health Insurance

Assalam Alaykum Warahmatullah Wa Barakatuhu,

In current situation, that everyone should have the health insurance. Is it permissible in Islam to purchase the health insurance. Please let us know about it.

In principle, health insurance is not permissible in Islam. This is because one is unsure about the exact return he will receive for his payments. Thus, this would fall under the ruling of gambling which is prohibited in Islam. However, in cases of necessity shari’ah has allowed such transactions. Thus, in certain areas and scenarios (where one may suffer severely financially without such insurance), there would be scope for permissibility based on one’s needs.
