Is a woman’s voice ‘awra?

Question

Is a woman’s voice considered a part of her ‘awrah? If a woman delivers a lecture or recites a nasheed, would it be permissible for non-mahram men to listen to her?

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

A woman’s voice is not considered a part of her ‘awrah. However, the shari’ah requires that a woman does not unnecessarily soften her tone, as this can become a means of attracting men. Thus, it is best to avoid listening to a woman’s voice unnecessarily altogether. Furthermore, it would be even more severe for a man to listen to a nasheed recited by a non-mahram since nasheeds are read in a melodious tone.
