Is it permissible for a woman to get married without a wali?

As-salaamu ’alaykum,

I want to know the details and process for Islamically marrying a woman who will accept Islam, but who has no Muslim male relative to be her wali.

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

Wa ‘alaykum as salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

In the aforementioned scenario, the nikah will be valid without a wali. A woman may appoint someone on her behalf to carry out the duties of nikah with the person of her choice. In Islamic terminology this person will be called her wakeel. If no such person is available, she may herself participate in the nikah.
