Is it sunnah to sit and drink?

As salaamu’alaykum

I have a question regarding the sunnah about drinking whilst sitting. Is it actually a sunnah? Can you give me a sahih hadith regarding this matter?

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

The Prophet’s ﷺ teachings in this matter are quite clear. He ﷺ disapproved of drinking while standing. This is proved from the following narration mentioned in Sahih Muslim and many others:

عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم زَجَرَ عَنِ الشُّرْبِ قَائِمًا

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger(may Allah bless him and give him peace) disapproved of drinking while standing.

The above mentioned narration, along with others, prove that it is sunnah to sit while drinking. There are, however, other narrations proving that drinking while standing is not haram. Thus, the fuqaha have deemed the act of standing while drinking to be makruh tanzihi (disliked).
