Leaving the masjid while performing I’tikaaf

Is a person who is performing i’tikaaf permitted to leave the masjid?

A person who is performing i’tikaaf may  only leave the masjid out of necessity. For example, one may leave to relieve themselves, to perform wudu  (provided that he is not currently in the state of wudu), and to take an obligatory bath. However, he may not leave the masjid merely for the purpose of brushing his teeth, renewing his wudu while he is currently in the state of wudu, or showering when he is not in need of an obligatory bath.
