Naming one’s child Rafay

As-salaamu’alaykum, 

My son’s name is Muhammad Rafay Amjad. Is this a correct name according to the Shari’ah or should the name be changed to Abdul Rafay? Please guide me. Wassalam, jazakumullahu ho khair.

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

Rafi’ (رافع) is the sifat or attribute of Allah subhanahu wata’ala. Therefore naming one’s child Abdur Rafi’ is permissible. However, naming one’s child just Rafi’ is also permissible as it was the name of the famous sahabi Rafi’ Bin Khadij radhiyallahu ta’ala anhu.

Allah subhanhu wata’ala knows best.
