Permissibility for men to wear a ring

Question

Is it permissible for a man to wear a ring? If so, how many may he wear at once?

Answer

 بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

In principle, men are not permitted to wear any form of jewelry as doing so is a form of imitating women which has strictly been prohibited in hadith. However, it is proven that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) wore a silver ring. Furthermore, the Messenger (may Allah bless him and give him peace) specifically set a maximum weight for a silver ring worn by men (that it should not exceed 4.86 grams). Thus, the permissibility of wearing rings for men would be restricted to this and it would not be permissible for men to wear non-silver rings or silver rings which exceed 4.86 grams in weight. Likewise, since it is only proven that the Messenger (may Allah bless him and give him peace) only wore one ring at a time, it would not be permissible to wear more than one ring.

However, there are certain ahadith in which the Messenger (may Allah bless him and give him peace) discouraged men from wearing rings unless they were leaders (and used their ring as a seal for letters). Based on these ahadith, some ‘ulama are of the view that it would be better to avoid wearing rings unnecessarily.
