Is checkers board game halal?

In principle, Muslims should only engage in matters which are beneficial for them in this world or the hereafter. Regularly indulging oneself in futile or useless matters goes against the spirit of Islam. However, occasionally taking part in such activities as a means of leisure or mental relaxation would be permitted provided one does not become so engrossed in it that it causes them to delay fulfilling their religious obligations.
