Qur’an Khani at the death of a Muslim

Question

Is it permissible to hold a Qur’an khwani (a gathering in which Quran is recited) upon the death of a Muslim brother or sister for the purpose of conveying the reward of the recitation to the deceased?

Answer

 بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

While reciting Qur’an for the deceased is commendable, it should be understood that holding a specific gathering for this purpose was not done in the time of the Messenger (may Allah bless him and give him peace), the companions, or in any of the early generations of Islam. Therefore, such gatherings are not fard, wajib or sunnah. However, they would be permissible provided that no sinful act, such as a mixed gathering, is done along with it.

It is also necessary that no one is coerced to attend the event against their will and no acts are carried out which are considered necessary due to culture but have no basis in Islam.
