To remember Allah with the satr/awra uncovered

Question

Assalamualikum, Is it permissible to verbally remember Allah when Naked( for example in the shower) or when one is just wearing their underwear (right before bed) or when the satar is not fully covered (like when swimming)?

Answer

 بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

From the outset, it is important to keep in mind that modesty is an integral part of our faith.  We are encouraged to be bashful and modest in every aspect of life, regardless if others are present or not. Consider the following hadith:

The companions (may Allah Ta’ala be pleased with them) once asked the Prophet (may Allah Ta’ala bless him and give him peace) in regards to their satr being exposed whilst alone, the Prophet (may Allah Ta’ala bless him and give him peace) replied,  “Allah Ta’ala is more deserving to be shown modesty than people.” (Ibn Majah)

Therefore, you should try to make sure that your satr is never exposed unnecessarily, as this is against modesty. In reference to your question, the Fuqaha have mentioned that verbally remembering Allah Ta’ala in such a state that one’s satr is uncovered is a form of disrespect and should be avoided. However, one may remember Allah Ta’ala in his heart and mind at all times.
