Women hearing the Friday sermon from ones house over the speaker
Question
Sometimes the adhan, salah, recitation of the holy Quran or khutba (sermon) is audible in the homes either because the homes have speakers connected to the masjid or because of the closeness to the masjid. The question is whether it is mandatory to listen to this and stop all work under these circumstances?
Answer
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما
From the outset, it should be understood that recitation of the Qur’an, adhan and the Jum’ah khutba are integral parts of deen and hold high reverence. One should always try to be attentive and respectful when any of the aforementioned are being recited. However, the ruling of being attentive and focused for a person in the masjid for Jum’ah is more emphasized than a person listening from home. Thus, a person listening from home may listen to the khutbah while continuing their work, but it would be better for them to turn off the speaker if they are not listening to it.
