Zakah on jewelry

Question

Is it necessary to give zakah on jewelry?

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما

It is necessary to give zakah only on gold and silver. There is no zakah on other types of metal (platinum, copper, etc.) or precious stones (rubies, diamonds, etc.). The method of calculating how much money must be paid for one’s jewelry is done by determining the weight of the gold or silver and then finding out its cash value. This amount should be added to one’s liquid assets (i.e. money in one’s ownership). If the total sum is equal to or more than the value of 612.15 grams of silver, then 2.5% of that sum must be paid in zakah. If the sum is less than the value of the aforementioned amount of silver, zakah will not be compulsory.
